John Higgins qualifies for Worldwide Championship

Former champion John Higgins comfortably reached the venue phases of the Worldwide Championship with a 6-1 victory within the qualifiers on Friday.

The Scot, who captured the rating occasion crown in 2015, simply overcame the problem of Thai rookie Manasawin Phetmalaikul with a 6-1 scoreline.

As he has demonstrated on quite a few events already this season, Higgins was in high quality scoring type.

The Wizard of Wishaw compiled a brace of century breaks and added an extra three half-century contributions to soundly advance.

The 48 year-old led Ronnie O’Sullivan 5-2 within the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters final week solely to frustratingly lose the final 4 frames to Rocket, who went on to raise the invitational trophy.

However Higgins confirmed no indicators of any hangovers as he booked a return journey to China for the Worldwide Championship in November.

Elsewhere, there have been contrasting triumphs for Shaun Murphy and Neil Robertson.

Murphy, the campaign-opening Championship League champion, matched Higgins’ five-frame successful margin in a simple defeat of Andres Petrov.

Robertson survived a a lot more durable outing, finally taking the final two frames to safe a 6-4 victory over fellow Australian Ryan Thomerson.

In the meantime, there have been a few deciders on day 5 of the Worldwide Championship qualifiers.

World Championship semi-finalist Si Jiahui prevailed in a topsy-turvy battle with Julien Leclercq, whereas John Astley pipped Jamie Clarke in a 6-5 nail-biter as nicely.

Among the many others to progress to the final 64 of the competitors in Tianjin have been Ali Carter, Chris Wakelin, Joe O’Connor, Dominic Dale, and Marco Fu.

The latter’s victory was notably spectacular, with Fu ousting world no.12 Robert Milkins at Ponds Forge.

The three-time rating occasion winner from Hong Kong compiled breaks of 109, 87, 68, 60, and 51 to once more bolster his confidence following a current victory over Hossein Vafaei.

On Saturday, the preliminary stage concludes with 2014 champion Ricky Walden the highest-profile title taking part.
